This project is the result of a blog post by Geoff Smith. He was writing a few reflections after having read the book Christian Archy with a small group, and noted:
One other thought about the book would perhaps be a section, or even an html address to specific practical steps that could be taken by an individual and church community to live under Christ’s archy. And I stress ‘could’ because it is Christ who is ultimate, not any list of steps (My Blog, http://blaargracer.blogspot.com/2011/05/further-thoughts-about-christian-archy.html).
I think that practical application is a real need, and as a result I came up with the idea of a web site dedicated to looking at practical things we can do to live under Christ’s archy. For those who have not read the book, living under Christ’s archy means putting the authority of Jesus above all other authorities. It means not giving our allegiance to political systems, but first to the gospel.
I originally intended to link this project to christian-archy.com, the book support site for Christian Archy. But then I realized that the first three volumes in the Areopagus series, Christian Archy, Ultimate Allegiance, and The Politics of Witness, all address very similar concerns though in different ways. A number of other books Energion publishes touch on similar issues. Thus underchristsarchy.com was born.
